Baby, Spray Me One More Time

By: Shauna Moline

I know, I know. You're sick of hearing about Britney Spears, aren't you? Me too. She's all over the tabloids, the rumor mills, the gossip pages, the movie screen, and now - now she's got a fourth perfume out to tickle your nose hairs, if you have any.

If you pegged me as a Britney Spears fan, try again. But, while I may not like the girl, she does have some compelling scents, and since it's not a requirement to like her, I think I'm okay. Whether or not you like them is a different story, but it's easy to find out. Just try them out.

Britney Spears has four different perfumes on the market right now. The first three (Curious, Fantasy, and In Control) were released annually beginning in 2004. Curious actually won best fragrance in 2004 and 2005. The newest fragrance is Fantasy Midnight, and it has debuted to mixed reviews. You can find Britney Spears perfumes online or you can go to your local department stores. Your best bet would be to shop online - it's cheaper, though you can't smell them first.

Britney Spears doesn't make any of these perfumes. Instead a company by the name of Elizabeth Arden has purchased the right to use her name on these bottles (and I bet they paid a hefty sum too). She joins the ranks of such women as Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, and Elizabeth Taylor who have also given consent for their names to be used to sell perfume.

Britney Spears first perfume was called Curious, and as mentioned, it won best fragrance of 2004 and best women's fragrance of 2005. Britney was reportedly paid 12 million dollars to put her name on the bottle, a bottle which went on to earn over 100 million dollars for Elizabeth Arden and company. It came in your choice of blue or pink and is described by wearers as a light floral scent.

The second perfume to be introduced was Fantasy, and Elizabeth Arden went all out on the marketing campaign. Unfortunately, wearers of the new perfume weren't impressed and many said that marketing the scent of strawberry shortcakes turned out to be more of a fantasy than the perfume did. Also noticed - the bottle looks strangely like the Love Potion Number 9 bottle.

The second youngest child of the Britney Spears perfume family smells perhaps more like Britney Spears recent image as temptress and siren. Its base is white vanilla, but then includes a blend of creme brule (I kid you not), loquat fruit, midnight orchid, sugared sandalwood and musk. Most common complaint from wearers? Smell fading after an hour of use.

The latest Britney Spears perfume, Midnight, has been plagued with troubles, though different from the last perfume. This time the complaint wasn't that it was too weak, instead, it was too strong! Many wearers described it as an intoxicating, or even sickening, effect after wearing it for an hour or two. The scent has been compared to grape bubblegum or grape kool-aid.

As for price, look to pay about $50 to $70 dollars in your local department store. If you shop wisely, expect to pay about $30 to $50 dollars. Both of these prices are assuming you want a 3.3 oz bottle, anything less or more will change the price. Overall, I would have to say this is a contest too close to call; some people love it and some people hate it. My advice? Try it out at any department store, then head back home to buy it online.
