We are used to thinking anti-oxidants as part of dietary supplements to slow down the aging process and keep one's appearance healthy and younger-looking. But do you know one of the most active ingredients in the best anti-aging skin care products are antioxidants? Antioxidants, which includes Catechin Polyphenols from green tea extracts and a fat-soluble Vitamin C called Ascorbyl Palmitate, have been used in anti-aging skin serums and creams as ingredients, but the most potent of the six leading antioxidants is Idebenone. Of the six leading antioxidants tested by a group of researchers, Idebenone received the highest score which is 95 out of 100. The study was conducted to develop the first ever protocol to compare the efficacy of antioxidants on their effects on preventing free-radical skin damage. Compared to Coenzyme Q10 or Co Q10, which is a naturally occurring enzyme, Idebenone is a man-made analogue of this natural body product. Co Q10 is an essential antioxidant component of fatty or lipid membranes surrounding each cell and other little organelles such as microsomes and mitochondria. As a synthetic cell energizer it works by producing the needed energy for the reproduction of cells. However, Idebenone is different from Coenzyme Q10 in one very important way. During a hypoxic (low oxygen) condition, CoQ10 can switch function from an anti-oxidizing to an auto-oxidizing process. This auto-oxidation rapidly produces free radicals which damage the tissues of the body. Studies have shown that in such circumstances Idebenone prevents the free radical damage and maintains relatively normal cell ATP levels. We must read about mitochondrial processes in cells, to understand the way in which anti-aging benefits are provided by Idebenone. Ninety percent of all ATP bioenergy is produced by the mitochondrial cells. These contain the richest sites of Co Q10 or Idebenone. Mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA allocates the reproduction of mitochondria themselves. Our levels of mtDNA receive more damage as energy generation by the mitochondria become less and less effective as we age. Cells in the heart muscle, brain and skeleton are the most vulnerable to damage as mitochondrial energy is depleted due to aging and the regeneration of cells slow down. Consequently cells die and degenerative diseases develop over time. Idebenone, therefore, provides an anti-aging effect here in several ways. Unlike Co Q10, even under the low oxygen conditions that may occur periodically over a lifetime, Idebenone will serve as a powerful mitochondrial free radical quencher, lessening the ever-increasing mtDNA damage that occurs with age. Idebenone will work even better than Co Q10 within the electron transport chain to keep energy production high, even under hypoxic conditions.
