Gas Prices Ending Your Summer Travel? Gas Saving Tips for Travel

By: Scott Siegel

As gasoline prices continue to set records and you find yourself spending more and more money at the gas pump, the prospect of taking that driving vacation trip seems more expensive than ever. You can travel and not break your budget on gas.

You can control your gas consumption. Remember, you the owner and operator of your car, are the best fuel saving device. There are some basic tips that you can follow to ease your gas burden while traveling.

First, get rid of all the extra stuff you are carrying in your trunk. Remove that 40 pound bag of dog food you bought two weeks ago. Remove your extra tool kit. Take the box of paper to the recycling center now, instead of carrying it around for another week. Every 100 lbs of weight that you remove from your auto will save you between 1 and 2 percent of your gasoline usage. If your car is lighter it will be much more fuel efficient.

Before you leave on your trip fill up your tank. You already have discovered the best stations to purchase gasoline near your home. Most likely it will be lower priced than the gas stations along your vacation route. You might even be best off buying your gasoline the day before you leave. In most cases the day you leave will likely be rushed and hurried. You might be pressed for time to go to your regular station. If you purchase your gas the day before you will be able to do it without needing to rush around.

Another important tip, don't use luggage racks. Try and get everything inside the car if you need to pack your car for your vacation. The wind resistance created by using racks will significantly increase the amount of gas you will burn. The resistance will increase at higher speeds so it will be very detrimental to your fuel economy on the highway.

On the turnpikes and freeways use your cruise control. The more you can maintain your vehicle at a constant speed, the more gasoline you will save. Your cruise control will do a much better job of keeping a fixed speed than you can maintain manually.

If you use these tips you can still take that driving vacation without breaking your budget on gas costs. Following these easy suggestions will go a long way to help you control your costs.
