Help A Child In An Poor Country

By: Rod Richards

There isn't anything that pushes a person to action as much as viewing a destitute child. The advertisements on TV showing child poverty in El Salvador or other third-world countries push us to sponsor a child, and many individuals find themselves looking for the phone before the commercial is even over. However, others like to mull over their choice to give and want to know more about sponsoring a child.

Depending on your own views, you may prefer to help children in need Christian charity donations, donations to another religion-based relief organization, or a completely secular charities. Most main faiths have multiple options and bodies such as the United Nations and other international service groups have non-religious programs.

When the majority of individuals choose to help children, they will usually want to go with non-profit groups. Donating to such charities is usually a tax-deductible expense. Also, for a group to be classified as non-profit they are required to have their records and their books under close watch of the government. Nevertheless, different organizations have different philosophies on how to use your money, so research your options carefully prior to donating.

When you make the choice to sponsor a child in need, you don't need your donations to go into advertising or salaried employees only. You want the bulk of your donation to go to the sponsored child! Online charity evaluators are there to let you know what amount of a major not-for-profit group's funds go directly to the child and what amount goes to overhead such as salary and advertising materials. Evaluators also note the size and age of each non-profit group.

Don't disregard an organization automatically if it isn't listed, but make sure to ask more questions if this is the case. If it's important to you to specify a certain country, the gender of the child you're sponsoring, or getting standard communication or updates on your child, make sure you learn those things before donating. Each organization asks for slightly different amounts, but the typical monthly donation is $25 to $30 a month.

Choosing to sponsor a child requires just a small sacrifice from you each month. However, in the third-world country where the poor child lives, this can translate into a lot of money. It can mean enrollment in school, enough clothes and quality housing, necessary health care, and especially enough food to keep from starving and to stay healthy.

It is often a great idea to have a group sponsor a child, such as a Sunday or religious school class or scout troop or even large families. This way the expense per person can be very little, but the child gets the help he or she needs. This can teach both the value of giving and caring as well as the advantages of working together.

We've all noticed television advertising depicting such sad things as child poverty and asking us to sponsor a child, and many individuals do exactly that. Your religious beliefs might lead you to focus on Christian charity donations, or charities based on other religions, or completely secular children's relief groups. Most major faiths offer several relief children's charity from which sponsors can decide, and non-religious programs are available through the United Nations and other international service organizations. Not only can your contribution save a child from starvation, it ensures the child has medical care, schooling, clothing and shelter. It costs each person little while still assisting the child.
