Horse Racing is a Fun-Filled Way to Trade?

By: Christopher Temple

I don't think many traders appreciate the wide choice of alternative markets that are available to them.

I trade the Forex markets (naturally) but I'll also trade stocks and shares, commodities, cfd's, football, actually I'll trade most sports. In fact I'll trade any market where there is plenty of liquidity, and where statistically I have a better than even chance of coming out ahead.

Now I love trading systems, and better still, I love testing and developing other people's systems to the point where I am totally confident that they will definitely work for me and make me a hatful of money. I don't mind where the system comes from, and what market, so long as it rocks for me, or I can mould it to my requirements and eventually make it suit me and my trading style.

Recently a friend suggested that I trade race horses. Now - I don't ever go to horse racing tracks, and I used to think that people who loved horse racing betting were crazy - why would anyone bet on something as uncertain as horse racing where the least problem (weather, a cold, a stumble, even a loud bang) can cause a disaster?

To be frank with you, I thought nobody could possibly win money betting on horses. Just too many intangibles.

Well I'm happy to say that I have changed my mind. I love a challenge and recently I have been looking seriously a whether I should consider trading the horse racing market (as a trading exercise - you understand), and I have been converted, I now think that it is possible to win money big time in this market, just so long as you have the right data and the right betting system.

The net provides the data, (far more than I can possibly manage) and my problem is not locating the information I need for a cost-effective system, but separating out the good information from the less good.

The racing market is a giant industry and many people make a good living from it, supplying all sorts of vital information. It's all good and reliable information too, but all I search for is just enough to be able to trade at a profit!

I have found a very useful site which lists and reviews the best horse racing betting and wagering systems and with links out to more than 30 reasonably priced horse racing betting systems. It was there that I managed to locate and ultimately invest in several horse racing betting systems which seem to give me a good statistical edge both for win and place betting.

More recently I have discovered Betting Exchanges: these are internet betting web sites where I am not taking on the bookies but pitting my wits against other punters like myself, on an equal footing (and without paying the bookie's built in premium). Using a Bet Exchange, I can not only bet on a horse to win or to be placed, I can also take the bookie's place and lay a horse, i.e. bet on it to lose.

I've also bought a Lay Betting trading or betting system too, and have been practicing it ever since.

So now I have several horse racing trading systems at my disposal, all of which give me (according to my calculations anyway) a statistical probability of winning over the long term. Now, when things are slow on the financial markets I can dabble with my horse racing gambling systems and make a few dollars there too.

Mind you, I do prefer to think of this activity as trading and not gambling, and interestingly - although I have still never been to a race track and rarely watch the races on TV - the whole process seems a lot more fun than Forex Trading.

To my trading colleagues out there - Take Notice! Get a happier and more fun- filled trading life! Trade horses too!

Mmmm that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean!
