We’ve all been to a friends' house for dinner and talked endlessly about the kids, or house prices or where you hope to go on holiday next year. Once the dinner is over everyone is pretty much ready to be making excuses to leave and a week later the evening seems indistinguishable from any other. Wouldn’t it be great if you could make your dinner party unique and something that your friends talk about for months to come? Well, if your friends are good sports once they’ve had a few drinks, then a murder mystery dinner party would be just the thing to entertain them long into the future. Organizing such a party need not be difficult and they can be suited to all ages from teenagers to senior citizens. The Internet is full of resources to get you started, as any Google search for “murder mystery” will prove. So, where to start? It's best to consider who your guests might be. If they are fun-loving folk, the sort of people you like to mix with, then you are on to a winner. Some may be a little shyer, but you can adjust your story to take account of those too – just ensure that you have at least six story-tellers or show-offs and you will have you party started. Now you need a theme for the evening party. We've all seen the Agatha Christie stories where a group of strangers meet in an old mansion, or a house party goes wrong, but don't limit yourself to these ideas. Let your imagination fly and find a theme that will amuse your guests. You could set your story anywhere from Renaissance Italy to the far distant future, and in any country from France to Mars – the secret is to find something that enthuses you. Draw up a list of possibles and you can begin your search for someone to help you realize your dreams. There are three ways you could approach this, and what you choose will depend upon your budget, your available time for organizing and how confident you are. Firstly, you could do the whole thing yourself, but this is hard work and you may not have the skills to undertake it if you've never hosted such an event before. Secondly you can buy many games in shops that will present you with a full scenario, a set of invites and character notes and often a CD to help guide you on the evening itself. These are perfect for the beginner, although you are limited in what plots are available – you may need to compromise. Thirdly, there are companies of experienced writers and performers who will turn up in your village hall and take all the stress away from you. They will be experts at involving everyone in the mystery, and the devious mystery will unfold before your eyes. You can expect a great deal of hilarity from such an event, and the best companies also ensure that there is a mysterious secret that you can solve behind all the fanciful character names and gags. Just a simple Google search for “murder mystery party” or the like will present you with a list of names, so go on, what are you waiting for? Have a stab...
