Is Prison Break Prison Broken?

By: Groshan Fabiola

In the first season of Prison Break, it was all about Michael trying to get out before his scheduled execution. Cool twists abound. Body tattooed blue prints, shaky alliances, political conspiracies, it just rocked. A lot of folks were surprised that they actually succeeded, thinking it was a ploy that would quickly be reversed; it is ‘Prison Break’ after all; the title wouldn’t make much sense if they got out, would it?

In the second season, our heroes did just that. This fired off a debate in the fan community. Should the show change its title now that the boys were on the run and no longer focused on getting free? Was getting free a mistake for the show? Had it ‘jumped the shark’ so early in its life? I hadn’t considered it until I read the article ‘The Last Prison Break of 2006 – Thrill or Spill?’ at BuddyTV which pondered this conundrum to absurdity.

From my perspective, no! was against an execution deadline. We knew that deadline very early on. If the escape had not happened, would have been executed. Then the show would have really been lacking a purpose. Of course, he could have had his sentence commuted, then it wouldn’t have had much urgency. Borrrring.

It all comes back to that central question. Now that escape was inevitable, was it proper to even call it Prison Break from the get go since only the first season would deal with that task?

Actually, from a grammar stand point, the title makes as much sense with them out then with them in. Prison Break is a term that can be used either in the future, past, or present tense to describe a singular event. There is no temporal preference for the wording. As long as the story continues to evolve from that act, the title is appropriate.
