Is it time to purchase a High Definition Television ?

By: Tom Rooney

If you still possess an 'outmoded' TV, then buying a PlayStation3 videogame console may be merely the excuse to consider about aquiring your first one.

In the last few years televisions have got wider and skinnier, but have they got better ? The latest trend is High Definition Television, giving brilliant picture quality, but at a cost.

Take a look on the world wide web, or in the TV shops and you will see a massive quantity of HDTV units available. Slogans like plasma, rear projection and LCD are all over, and that is before you have chosen from a variety of screen sizes, shapes and manufacturers. It's enough to give you a headache !

We have prepared an easy to understand guide to the world of High Definition Television, so that you can decide for yourself if it's time to buy one.

What is High Definition Television, ?

Keeping it simple, it's all about small dots !

Have you ever observed how small fonts on your computer screen looks very sharp, but on your televisions it looks hazy ?

Your T.V and screen picture is constructed of dots of colour. Putting it simply, the dots on the T.V are bigger than those on the screen, so the picture on the screen appears crisper and can hold larger detail.

The smaller the dots, the more detailed the pictures will look. That is why High Definition Television pictures look great.

Why are High Definition Television Expensive ?

If we liken a normal 'dated' Cathode Ray Tube T.V with a full High Definition Television, assuming they have screens of the same size then we can see two things...

The colour dots that constitute the screen need to be 9 times smaller on the High Definition Television. This makes them very costly to make.

Also, you are paying for the cost of the R & D of these items.

Just like the PlayStation3 they cost a lot of money to develop, but not like the PlayStation3 the T.V companies can't get some of that money back every time you buy a new videogame.

This means you must pay more for each TV until these costs are met, then the cost will come down swiftly. We have already seen this with the lower resolution High Definition Television.
