John Stamos Talks About His ER Experience

By: Groshan Fabiola

Working in the entertainment industry for over twenty years, John Stamos hasn't really experienced much growth as an actor until he joined the cast of the long-running medical drama, ER.

43 year old Stamos, who plays the hot-tempered doctor Tony Gates in the series, told Variety that he had been talking to ER's executive producer John Wells for the past few years about joining the show. However, Stamos encountered some scheduling conflicts, thus making him settle for a two-episode stint in 2005. He added, "We thought, let's test the waters and do just a couple of shows and see how it works." He was referring to his first appearance on the show as a paramedic/medical student in the show's 12th season.

A little after his first appearance on ER, Noah Wyle, who played John Carter, left the show and its producers planned to make Stamos a regular cast member. Stamos was then working on a comedy, Jake in Progress however, ABC cancelled the series and he eagerly returned to ER.

Stamos said he "didn't want to be another bachelor guy dating a bunch of different girls again" made a return to the series not as a paramedic, but as as an intern at County General. Ever since he joined the medical staff, he has been known to act insubordinately and was also once involved in a love triangle.

Referring to Gates, Stamos said, "He's hands down my favorite character I've ever played. It's so much fun to be the new character who comes in and shakes everything up."

He was asked what he wanted for his character in the next season of ER and he replied, "We haven't discussed it much, but I can't wait to find out what he's going to do. I think Gates is going to be fighting to keep Sarah and trying to juggle life in the ER. He's going to try and raise this kid, be a good doctor and find love."

Eleven year old Chloe Greenfield plays Sarah on the drama series and Stamos said that watching her work "was amazing" while talking about his favorite scenes in the show.
