Lost: Emmy Win for O'Quinn

By: Groshan Fabiola

On the ABC network's hit serial drama series Lost, spiritual survivor John Locke is played by Terry O'Quinn. The actor was previously nominated during the show's first season for an Emmy Award, though he didn't snag the golden statuette at that time. This year, he was nominated again and finally won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama series, thanks to his continued performance on the third season of Lost. Among O'Quinn's competitors for the award was his own Lost co-star Michael Emerson, who plays the role of Ben Linus. The outcome of the awards ceremony has been deemed as bittersweet by series fans.

Among the others contending for the award were Masi Oka from Heroes, William Shatner from Boston Legal, Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos, and T.R. Knight from Grey's Anatomy. Many had considered Oka's portrayal of Hiro Nakamura, a good-hearted Japanese office worker and consummate geek who can manipulate the space-time continuum, as the hands-down favorite to win the award. But on the other hand, it has also been argued that O'Quinn certainly deserved to bring home the golden prize for the faith-oriented Locke and his game-playing ways, specifically during the first and third seasons of the island drama.

Among the challenges and dangers the surviving passengers of the plane crash faced were the presence of the mysterious Others, the smoke monster, and the DHARMA Initiative. Locke helped along his fellow survivors as they explored the island, often demonstrating a rational inclination towards better cooperation and organization among them. He also strongly believed in a higher purpose guiding them, as well saying that the island felt like a sort of nexus for spiritual energy. Locke has been described as shamanistic in this respect, though there were points in the series that his faith was nearly broken and he almost perished.
