NOKs Collecting Battles – A Virtual Trading Card Game For Kids

By:

NOKs’ games focus on collecting 3D characters called NOKs. The first game, NOKs Collecting Battles is currently available as a PC game, was published by Atari Israel and has more than 100 unique characters. The game’s main appeal is in the combination of action game, trading card game and community building, and is very innovative as it diverges from the traditional video game trends, managing to introduce classic play mechanisms into a modern, lucrative arena.
Once installed, the user receives 10 randomly chosen NOKs, each with its own personality and value. The user’s main goal is to collect as many NOKs as possible by either by playing against the computer, trading NOKs online with other users, or by buying more disks. The games to win NOKs are called ‘NOKlear Wars’, where the players enter war zones armed with 5 NOKs, ready to fight the computer or other players to win more NOKs.
NOKs And The Market

After founding NOKs Technologies in 2000, the company chose to launch its first kids game on PC platform mainly because it was the only platform that was realistically capable of supporting multiplayer games. Our vision was to mimic the huge trading cards industry mechanisms, and transforms them from the paper world into video games. By doing so, kids could collect richer, livelier exciting characters, while enjoying video games and sitting in front of the entertainment centers they are used to: the consoles and the PC. Three years ago, the idea of kids collecting virtual characters had to confront skeptic remarks. Today, six months after releasing the game with Atari Israel (part of Atari, one of the worlds leading game publishers) more than 100,000 NOKs have been collected and its online forum is a very active and crowded place. The game has proven to be very popular among its target market of kids age 7-13. The company believes that the game concept of characters collection and Arcade was proven in Israel in the first half of 2003.

NOKs Technologies would like to set its course alongside the market demand by releasing its next version of its games as console games. The company would also like to leverage the new game platforms that are entering the market these days: the Sony PSP, the Game Boy DS and even Tapwave Helix, the new Palm OS gaming platform. These handheld devices are expected to control the handheld games market, expected to grow exponentially with the support of two factors: the introduction of new technology and the readiness and acceptance of the consumers.
