Tobacco is a plant that causes addiction if either smoked or taken in any other method. Nicotine is a chemical in tobacco that causes a good feeling for a little period of time. In other forms it is called as smokeless tobacco. These are commonly known as dip, chew, snuff, spit or chewing tobacco. It is put between the lip and the gum and sucked on in the mouth.

Your mind and body will become so used to nicotine products that you’ll find it hard to quit the habit. Nicotine and other poisonous chemicals in tobacco cause a lot of diseases like lung problems, heart problems and some kinds of cancer. The other ill effects of chewing tobacco and smoking are that the lungs and heart is damaged. Smokers this feel tired. The longer you smoke the worse the damage. Initially tobacco when taken into the body creates a lot of problems like nauseated feelings. People who smoke cough and feel a burning sensation in their lungs and throat. Later the body gets accustomed

Facts on smoking show that no smoker begins as an adult. Statistics have shown that nine out of ten tobacco addicts started in tobacco products before they were eighteen years of age.

How do people start smoking?
If you have seen the adverts of the cigarette companies before advertising by tobacco companies was banned you would see even doctors relaxing by taking a puff or two. Ads still show smokers as attractive, sophisticated people. They show smoking as a way to be rebellious, unconventional and elegant. Most teenagers get hooked by these types of adverts. Even though adverts are not there, Cinema icons and their on screen smoking habits are imitated by many gullible youngsters. Other reasons whey teens smoke are
• It helps them look older
• It helps them relax
• It helps set them apart as rebellious and cool guys
• It helps me keep friends with cool guys who smoke (some smoke because their friends smoke)
• The silliest reason is that it helps keep my weight down. (Well any disease would do that since smoking damages your lungs and heart it definitely will keep you thin). This reason is oft cited by girls
• Another reason why people start smoking is because their family members do so.

Effects of smoking on health
1. Nicotine and cyanide are the chemical in cigarettes which if taken in large doses might kill a person. Smoke and smokeless tobacco that you take are gradually poisoning your body and you die earlier. Pregnant woman smoking could affect the child as well. Passive smoking affects in the same manner as active smoking.
• Cancer
• Emphysema
• Organ damage
• Heart disease
• Wrinkles and bad skin that may lead to psoriasis
• Loss in bone density and risk of osteoporosis
• Fertility problems in both men and women
• Yellow teeth and persistent bad breath a condition called halitosis
• Reduced athletic performance due to factors like rapid heart beat and decreased circulation.
• Risk if injury due to damages to tendons and ligaments because of the disability of producing collagen and slower healing time.
• Colds, flu, bronchitis, pneumonia and Asthma are diseases to which they are susceptible.

If you have a friend that smokes help him/her by encouraging them to quit. Cite the different health reasons; offer him advice on how his finances are affected. Find out article on effective ways to quit smoking or dangers of smoking and print and give it to them. You could help him/her to talk with a parent or school counselor. Quitting is a bit difficult that is why people just say it is so much easier not to start smoking than giving it up.
