Smart Career Management Is The Best Way To Get Ahead In Your Career

By: Arthur Manford Chambers III

In the world of increasing world-wide competition, technological advancement, and market trends, good career management is necessary. You have to take charge of your career as if you are the quarterback of the game setting up the play for the final touchdown. In order to remain on top in your field, you can’t afford to relax after you land a job and take it for granted that you will always have it or that it won’t change. Most people would not be happy with that anyways. It would be dull and boring and eventually lose its attractiveness.

So, how do you work in a shaky work atmosphere while staying positive and in control? You don’t want to get so paranoid that every little rumor from the corporate mill has you scared of a layoff. You want to be prepared in the event of a layoff, but you also want to be positive that you are a needed part to your company. Don’t assume you will never be laid off, but don’t assume the company is going under either.

In the corporate workplace, employees have become easy to replace. Envision yourself as something that you are promoting to your company, every day. If the product you are selling is an asset to your company, it will always buy your brand. If, however, your product isn’t giving them what they want, becomes easily replaced, or becomes difficult, then the company will quit buying the product.

One of the most important functions of a company is to make money. If the commodity they hold, you, is not valuable to them in terms of the bottom line, then they may decide in tough times to lay you off and look for some other way to fill your position. That’s the reality of business.

The previous view was what started much of the rush towards outsourcing in past years. Many jobs were not only easily replaced for less in other countries, but the business owners doing the replacing saw no benefit to keeping an American employed versus hiring someone in another country. One of the biggest areas that this trend left an impression on was the outsourcing of technical support and customer service call centers.

Now, we are beginning to see the problem with the idea of a human being as just a piece in a big machine. The outcome is that employees leave those positions and go in search of employment elsewhere in another sector of industry. Meanwhile, foreigners may not understand the cultural environment of the buyers they are dealing with in the United States. The result is that customers get frustrated with their purchasing experience and sometimes find other places to do business.

Now, we have a rising development called insourcing, where Americans are being hired by companies in India to answer calls in call centers so that the buyers are met with someone who is culturally similar and can speak their language. This is how many employees have made themselves a valuable asset to their company as human beings again. This is why you should never underestimate the power of how your cultural upbringing and soft skills can aid you in career management.
