The smokeless tobacco habit is easily as debilitating as the addiction to smoking. In fact, most experts believe that it is even more insidious. Part of the problem is that sports heroes have glamorized the use of dip or chew. Many people who chew tobacco started as early as nine years of age! By the time many of these children turn eighteen, they are dying from thorat and mouth cancers. There is nothing quite as ugly as a face ravaged by tumors or cancer, except maybe how the victim's face looks after having surgery to amputate the jawbone, lips, or tongue. Unfortunately, in most cases the surgical massacre of the victim's face really doesn't matter, because they are dead within a year anyway. The experts tell us that the physical addiction to Nicotine is broken after abstaining for seven days. However, the psychological addiction is much stronger and takes a lot more time and effort to overcome making it difficult to quit smokeless tobacco. There are 3 individual components to a dipping habit. Two of the components are emotional/mental, and only one part is physical. Part A: YOU CHEW TOBACCO FOR RELAXATION AND PLEASURE. When you were a little baby and you got upset, your mother would put a pacifier into your mouth to pacify you. You would get distracted, become more peaceful, and often go to sleep. That sequence of events was repeated dozens of times so that your unconscious mind was programmed: When something goes into your mouth, you get relaxation and pleasure from it. Now that you are a grownup, if you feel agitated, you crave something in your mouth for relaxation and pleasure - chew! Part B: CHEWING TOBACCO IS A CONDITIONED RESPONSE. Remember Pavlov? Every time that he fed his dogs he would ring a bell. After a few repetitions, he would just ring the bell, and that would make the dogs salivate. When you link dipping with any other action, the other action will trigger cravings for tobacco and a compulsion to chew. This is called a conditioned response. For example: If you chew when you drive your car, you will automatically get an urge to chew each time you drive your car. Here is exactly how this conditioned response gets programmed into your subconscious: If a person chews smokeless and simultaneously drinks a cup of coffee, the mind takes a snapshot of the tobacco in the hand, and links it to the cup of coffee. Thereafter, every time the person has a cup of coffee, his unconscious mind fills in the missing part of the picture. It flashes an image of the dip, and the dipper gets a craving for chewing tobacco. You may be unaware of the mental movie of the chewing tobacco, because it may only be at the subconscious level of mind. Just as you are not consciously aware of what you are seeing through your peripheral vision until something or someone draws your attention to it. But the image is there, creating a craving for smokeless tobacco. Part C: THERE IS A PHYSICAL ADDICTION TO NICOTINE, BUT . . . After having worked with several thousand people for tobacco addiction I guarantee that the physical addiction to smokeless is the weakest part of the addiction to smokeless. In fact, I believe that it is only ten percent of the addiction. The strongest parts of the smokeless are the mental and emotional parts! (Parts A and B). HERE IS WHAT THIS MEANS TO A PERSON WHO DIPS SMOKELESS AND WHO WANTS TO QUIT. What this means is that as soon as you eliminate the anxiety that compels you to put dip into your mouth for relaxation and pleasure (Part A) . . . and when you erase the conditioned response of feeling a compulsion for chew when having a cup of coffee, driving, or finishing a meal, etc. (Part B) . . . then you can dipping without the requirement of willpower, and without suffering from withdrawal symptoms or weight-gain. Self-hypnosis will make it easy to break the addiction to smokeless because it takes care of Parts A & B! Here is how: Part A is where you dip tobacco for relaxation and pleasure. It's our thoughts that create anxiety. More exactly, people constantly watch mental movies in their mind's eye. If the movie is negative, it brings on a feeling of tension. We can use different NLP and Hypnosis methods to program the subconscious to rapidly take those anxiety creating mental pictures, and automatically exchange them for relaxation producing mental pictures and movies. This produces relaxation and pleasure, and obliterates the anxiety that creates the oral urges and compulsions for chewing. Because of the elimination of stress, the person who is quitting does not feel the compulsion or need to substitute food in place of the smokeless tobacco. So quitting without weight gain is possible. Part B is where people dip tobacco because dipping smokeless becomes a conditioned response to many different activities and locations. Remember in the earlier example how smoking became unconsciously associated with other activities and environments so that each time you get into that activity or environment, the mind flashes an image of smokeless tobacco in your hand, and the image of the smokeless tobacco in your hand creates an urge to chew tobacco? There are effective hypnosis technologies that can effectively erase those conditioned responses so that your unconscious will lose the cravings for dip, and the compulsion to dip smokeless tobacco. As a matter of fact, you can even get a compulsion to reject chewing. TO SUMMARIZE In summation, when we utilize certain hypnotic and NLP techniques, it can be very easy to stop chewing without weight gain or having to suffer from withdrawal. And many of these hypnotic methods don't even require post-hypnotic suggestions. They depend on training the subconscious mind to use the same mental processes that the subconscious mind is using to create the addiction to chewing tobacco, to eliminate the mental addiction.
