The Real World: Shauvon Speaks Up

Fans of the long-running MTV reality series The Real World got to know cast member Shauvon Torres in the show’s 19th season, The Real World: Sydney. The openly bisexual young woman who hails from Sacramento has stated that for her, keeping things real is one of her main goals in life. During a recent interview with the State Hornet, she explained that she made it a point to make sure that she acted and presented herself in a truthful manner during her stint on the reality series. Torres stated that other people in living in the Real World house with her had their own issues and constant arguments to contend with, but for her own part, she simply did her best to be herself and not let any labels affect her or the others.

Though on the bright side, Torres added that she did not feel any hostility or discomfort at all from her housemates stemming from her sexual orientation, nor even from the people of Sydney. One of the things that the Australian metropolis is recognized for is its highly active and visible community of gay people. Torres also said that she found the way that she and her fellow cast members were portrayed on the show to be relatively satisfactory, even though there were still several key points that suffered from what seems to plague most reality series: selective editing.

Torres said that while everything depicted on the show was factual and real, it was still carefully edited to leave contextualizing details out. One example was an episode wherein she had a date with a man for an entire day, yet the only scene that made it intact to the small screen was when they got physically intimate with one another. Though despite such issues, Torres said that she was still grateful for having gotten the opportunity to be on the show. She constantly played the peacemaker amongst her feuding roommates.
