The evolution of bridal shower favors and wedding favors.

By: Elizabeth Ellis

The ancient customs of Rome and Italy had their own way of showing gratitude to their guests. Initially, fruits, nuts and biscuits were given to guests before the ceremony. The Romans blessed their couples with fertility. Fruits and nuts represent this in their custom. The Italians were big on status. Therefore giving luxurious items like silk scarves and incense was a common practice amongst the wealthy. This showed that the tradition of giving out favors had dated all the way back to the 16th century. And sure enough they had come a long way.

Today, favors have whole new meaning had made appearances in all sorts of celebrations and functions. They are given to guests to honor their presence. It also serves as a memorabilia for the special day. It had also hit the corporate sectors and they had found that appreciations with favors can boost the company’s image.

Diverse cultures have different ways of expressing their positive reception of guests. They play a part in representing what the people hold dear to, their beliefs and ideals. No matter what it represents in any parts of the world, favors are always associated with wealth, fortune and health and long live happiness. Favors are therefore meaningful tokens that both newly wed and visitors will treasure.

Brides and grooms may feel like giving out wedding favors which are practical instead of simply and easy, economical or appropriate for the theme of the wedding. They can also be made personalized. This is imperative because favors not given for these rationales may not be appreciated by your guests. Providing them with something they can actually use after the wedding reception would be good so that you have the sense of security of your gifts not thrown away, a few days later. More companies provide their business online so finding and designing the perfect gift would be something you can do in the comforts of your own home. But, the best thing about them is they are surprisingly inexpensive so don’t ever plan to go without.

As with the evolution of wedding favors, bridal shower has also been making quite a lot of transformation since the beginning of the tradition. As legend has it, the tradition of bridal shower started in the Netherlands. According to popular belief, a young Amsterdam girl fell in love with a poor mill operator. Although he is poor, he spends most of his life helping those needier than himself.

When the bride’s father got hold of the lovebird’s intention to wed, he was furious and refused to give her daughter the customary bridal dowry. Without a dowry, the couple had very little to get by. Because her groom was a kind hearted man and was well-liked by his community, their friends heartedly “showered” the newlyweds with basic necessities for the couple’s new home. That is where the tradition of bridal shower emerged and now blooms into one of most significant tradition in the whole wide world.

Bridal showers are meant for the close friends and relatives of the bride. Brides to be would sometimes assign a theme to their showers like Hawaiian or Christmas theme but this would all be affected by the budget. Indeed, favors given would need to reflect the themes of the bridal showers. Whatever it is, brides need to make sure that that the gifts given are sincere because this would make it more meaningful. No matter how much you need to spend on these shower favors, if they can appreciate your little offerings, it would be always be priceless.
