Tips on Choosing a Graphic Designer

By: Joann Snell

Many business people do their own designs with stunning results. Still others struggle to get noticed by clients or just do not have any design skills. If you are one of the struggling businesses or have no design skills, you are probably wondering about one question. How do I choose a graphic designer? There are so many choices. Well, have no fear; I hope to shed some light on your dilemma in this article.

First of all, search the internet and choose three to four designers whose work you like. Then go back and review the designer’s portfolio more in depth. Ask yourself these questions: Is the work of good quality? Or does the work look like it was slapped together? Is the style of the designer appropriate for your needs? Did one designer work on the project or was it part of a team development? This last question may not be evident until you contact the designer.

Next, contact the designers either by phone or email. Find out if they present themselves as competent and knowledgeable? Can you and the designer see things eye to eye? Can you get along with the designers personality? Are the rates being charged within your budget? Are projects finished in a timely manner?

Once you have your choice narrowed to one designer you are ready to get down to business. Now is the time to discuss in detail every aspect of your project requirements. Let the designer know what you want from the start to finish. But I advise against telling the designer how to design. Therefore, both you and the designer need to communicate on a regular basis so there is no confusion of the project details. Be sure to include your expectations of the project and/or of the designer.

One last thing, I suggest using a contract. That way you and the designer have the project details in writing. The contract will help eliminate any confusion on the out come of the final project. Speaking of confusion, I hope I have made the task of choosing a graphic designer somewhat easier for you.
