Understanding Snowboarding Tricks Terms

By: Jessica A

Alright, so maybe it isn't exactly your thing to be able to hop on a snowboard in the winter cold and start doing flips, turns or getting big air off the top of a mountain. Some people get a huge thrill out of attempting snowboarding tricks, but for others, it's just plain insane!

However, you still want to be able to talk to your friends about it without getting lost and wearing a big dumb blank expression on your face. So we have put together a nice little cheat sheet for you to use so you can sound and talk just like a pro snowboarder. Here is some snowboarding tricks terminology.

Big Air - You've heard everyone say this before, and you probably had no idea what they were talking about if you're not a snowboarder. What this means is when a snowboarder speeds up the side of the half pipe, and then flips the board into the air.

Of course, the point is to go as high as humanly possible, then land it smoothly only to get to the other side of the half pipe and try it again. Yes, I know. These guys are pretty courageous.

Switch - When a trick is done in 'switch' that means it was done while snowboarding backwards.

Ollie - This is similar to an Ollie on a skateboard. The point is to catch as much air as possible by using the back of your board as a spring board while you jump up and lift your foot off the front of the board.

Speed Check - This means to ride sideways in order to slow down.

Scream - A scream is a hill so steep that you will probably be screaming the entire ride down.

Jib - Riding on something other than snow, such as cement, rails, grass, etc.

So you may not be talented to do all these tricks yourself, or maybe you just don't want to risk breaking your neck to do them. That's alright. At least now you can talk with your friends without sounding like a total noob. And, you never know, they just might convince you to try these snowboarding tricks.
