Cigar humidors are the perfect, and many would say the only, place to store cigars. The purpose of these storage units is to keep the temperature and humidity levels even so the cigars are always fresh. Cigar humidors come in multiple sizes and a variety of styles. The first reason that cigar humidors are used is to maintain a certain temperature that is as close to the natural environment of the tobacco as possible. Cigars are typically made in tropical areas, so the temperature inside the device should be somewhere in the neighborhood of seventy or eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Anything lower than that can cause drying and loss of natural flavors. Also, the humidity levels in these tropical regions are usually around seventy percent or so, which is exactly where cigar humidors should be set. By maintaining this humidity level, the leaves won't get dry and flavorless. The result with too little humidity will be stale cigars, and that is quite unappealing. Now, it is not only too little humidity and too low temperatures that can ruin cigars; too much heat or too much humidity can cause beetles to hatch within the tobacco leaves and make quite a meal out of your prized cigars. These little buggers actually already exist, as larvae, inside the leaves; they only come out when the hot, moist air allows them to hatch. Beyond the humidity and temperature levels, it is important to note that all cigar humidors are not equipped exactly the same way. For instance, not every humidor out there comes standard with a humidification system. And for the ones that do, you need to know exactly how they work. For example, some use plain old water to create humidity, whereas others use specially formulated solutions. Also, the inside of cigar humidors needs to be considered. They are made out of wood, but the type of wood is what is important. Just like too much cold can take away the natural depth of flavor, so too can the wrong wood choice. And there is always the chance that the wood's smell may overpower and seep within the cigars, too. For this reason, Spanish cedar is typically chosen because it does not interfere with the tobacco. Obviously, there is quite a bit more to cigar humidors than just being a place to keep your cigars... they serve a real purpose. To maintain freshness, taste, and quality, and to keep tobacco beetles at bay, choose carefully and wisely when shopping for cigar humidors.
