So when can I begin? And why? I would recommend around 21. As a teenager, a high level of testosterone is naturally present, which cause sparadic growth spurts in males. During this time period the body as a whole has not completely matured including bones, muscle tissue and internal body organs. Taking exogenous anabolic steroids and other hormones too young can play absolute havoc in the body during this delicate time of development. The main problem is that they can cause premature sealing of the epiphyseal bone closure process which consequently means you will not grow as big as your genetics could allow you. You can actually get a test done to see whether your growth plates have sealed yet. Usually it is safe to say around 21. During a teenagers development period the antigonadotropic effects of steroids are alot more visible. We also know that hpta (hormone axis) recovers in Adults and with Teenagers it is still unclear. One of the worst outcomes could be a permanent low level of testosterone due to the taking of exogenous sources at 15 when your hpta has still to become fully operational, and it goes without saying that at 21 natural testosterone levels are higher than at 15. When I started training at 15 some of my friends went on steroids almost immediately. I firstly decided to opt for the natural route as like most newbies I knew nothing about steroids other than the media portrayed horror stories. I researched all I could about training and tried virtually every natural supplement that was out at the time. As I got older at 18 I got talking to some serious bodybuilders at my local gym. They told me some of the basics but I decided I wanted to know more. If I was going to use steroids then I wanted to do it safely. I bought the magazines and would search out for articles on steroids although at that time there were very few. I think Mick had only just started writing in Muscle mag at the time. I also talked about it with my father who is a Clinical Biochemist, just to get an unbiased opinion. He was in fact very helpful (and still is today). I decided that the wise move would be to wait until I reached 21 in order to maximise my bone growth potential and at the same time avoiding any other irreversible damage. I was just under 6 ft at the time and it was hard too watch younger kids gaining muscle without hardly any effort at all, but I knew they were already juicing. Although it was a tough decision, I spent the next three years training really hard and at least 10 times more than anyone else. I was really determined to get big muscles through dedication and not by taking alternative supplements, so I just kept at it knowing that my time would come. I didn't waste anytime in research though and got some excellent advice from Mick's Layman's Guides, The Anabolic Reference Guide and the couple of books out by the late Dan Duchaine.
