Why You Need A Bill Of Sale Form

By: Tony Potter

When buying or selling a used car, it is important to obtain an auto bill of sale form. A bill of sale gives the seller proof that the title for the vehicle has been legally transferred to a third party. For the person buying the vehicle, a bill of sale documents the sale of the car and is the best way to prove ownership. There are several things that each bill of sale form should contain. The names and addresses of both the buyer and the seller, a description of the vehicle as well as the purchase price should all be documented.

Almost every state requires an auto bill of sale form to be produced before registering any newly purchased vehicle. The main reason this is required is to record the vehicle sale price for tax assessment as well as to record the odometer reading, which is used to prevent odometer fraud.

An auto bill of sale form that does not provide all the stated information will in many cases not be accepted and the vehicle will not be fit for registration.

Although there are one or two states that do not require an auto bill of sale form in order to complete your vehicle registration, consumers are still recommended to fill in such a form for their own security and peace of mind.

A bill of sale form will only take several minutes of your time to complete, but will provide a lifetime of protection.
