By: Bryan Hallett

Have you received an invitation to a murder mystery dinner? frightened that you will be out of place? Don't panic, this article will help you overcome your fears, and we have plenty of tips to aid you in your goal to unmask the villain.
In most murder mystery games there is a clear set of clues that will lead to the murderer All you need do is observe carefully and remember the three things that a murderer needs to commit a crime.
These are motive, means and opportunity - discover the person with all three and you can be pretty certain that they are the guilty party.
* Money -Would the suspect stand to gain an inheritance from the victim? What business interests are involved? Who is short of cash? Why would a suspect need money more than a clear conscience?
* Love - love and betrayal can cause jealousy - did the victim disappoint the suspect in matters of love?
* A dish best served cold - Had the victim hurt someone else in the scenario? Perhaps the victim is guilty of a previous crime, or they have thwarted the suspect on matters of love or money in the past.

In most dinner party scenarios, of course, most guests have a motive, but perhaps a few people have no good reason to kill. You can rule these people out early.

*Motive
What causes sane individuals to conduct a desperate act? Assuming that everyoneis a sane individual, which is usually the case in murder games, often motives are usually based around Money, Love and Revenge. Often these will overlap, but ask yourself these sort of questions:

*Means

Means and opportunity are closely linked, but it is often worth looking at them separately. Means is associated with the suspect having the equipment, specialist knowledge etc. to carry out the crime. Ask yourself how the crime was committed and then consider whether the suspects had the way to carry it out.

*Opportunity
This is associated with time and place. If a victim was stabbed and the suspect was miles away at the time, then they ain't guilty m'lud. It may also be important to consider when the victim was killed in relation to the time that a suspect acquired a motive - sometimes the motive becomes apparent after the crime.

*Other things to look for

There may be other clues at the crime scene - a watch, fingerprints etc, and these may help narrow down the list of suspects further. Observe and note all that you can.

Of course, all of these factors are wrapped up inside a complicated web of intrigue. Alibis can be faked, evidence can be planted and seemingly impossible feats can be performed by the most unlikely person - dreaming up such twists and turns is all part of the murder writer's job, otherwise everyone would solve the crime. But you can see trough their tricks, can't you?

Armed with this knowledge, you can get the right answer provided you pay careful attention.
