Would A Car DVD Player Be The Ideal Accessory For Your Auto?

By: Peter Finch

Today's car market is becoming more and more diversified, with Hummers lining up next to Smart Cars and Geo Metros in dealer lots. One of the first things many people do when they bring home a new vehicle is to make it theirs by adding custom touches.

One of the more popular upgrades around at the moment is the in car DVD player. It can certainly be a boon for entertaining bored passengers and no mistake.

If you're planning to take off on a long road trip to visit family you're certainly going to need something to keep the kids entertained. Anyone with a family is surely familiar with the 'are we there yet?' mantra coming from the back seat on long journeys. A car DVD player can be a great way to keep them engrossed on even the longest trips.

Basically, there are two types of DVD player that can be used in a car: portable systems and in-dash systems. Portable systems have the benefit of convenience (and they're cheaper too). You can take them out of the car and use them in other places. In terms of power for them, they can usually be plugged into the car's 12 volt dashboard-mounted power adaptor so you won't have to remember to bring plenty of batteries.

In-dash car DVD players are hard-wired into the car's entertainment system which will have the ability to play CDs and have a radio too. The DVD screen will either be in the center console, will descend from the car's roof, or it will flip up from the dashboard. Obviously these systems can only be used in the vehicle itself, they are not detachable and portable in any way. On the plus side, you can't forget to bring them, or find that you don't have the right power cord.

Screens located either on the center console or which flip up from the dashboard can double as displays for in-car GPS or navigation software, but they can be distracting to drivers. The screens that drop down from the roof of the car avoid driver distraction, but they are usually only convenient for back-seat viewing, leaving a front seat passenger to count license plates or play I-Spy with the driver.

In car DVD players are perhaps the biggest boon to the long family road trip since Car Bingo, and as the technology improves you can expect the systems to get smaller, lighter, and cheaper. Though portable systems are still the choice for families on the go since they require no expensive installation or conversion, more and more auto manufacturers have plans to include built-in systems in their vehicles, especially upscale and family autos.

The only problem you may encounter if you install a DVD player in your car is that no one will want to drive, they'll all be sitting on the back seat enjoying a movie.
