Niche Marketing or Mass Marketing For the Affiliate?

This question of whether an affiliate should go for niche marketing or mass marketing is a debatable one. There are generally two schools of thought. One group of affiliates would argue that mass marketing can hit a larger group of audience and hence make volumes of sales. The other, the niche marketers would vouch for the success of niche marketing and relative ease to conquer a niche. So who is right and what should be an option for you?

Before we dwell into the topic, we need to understand what is niche marketing and mass marketing. Niche marketing basically concentrates on promoting to a small tight market. This is specialization at play and niches are often ignored by big players who cannot be bothered with and are not interested with the small sales volumes created through niches. Mass marketing, on the other hand, tries to appeal to the general mass and offer a variety of products.

For the affiliate like yourself, the question you should ask is what kind of work are they prepared to do, and not whether niche marketing or mass marketing is better. Niche marketing focuses on finding small markets which have a demand but weak supply and hence is much easier to dominate. However, in order to grow your affiliate marketing business to a sizeable one, you need to conquer many niches.

So if you are one who prefers variety and do not mind trying and testing out new niches, then by all means, make use of niche marketing. This also requires you to research into many different topics and issues that are totally unrelated to one another. At the same time, attention has to be spread out to manage different niche websites and you could face the crunch of time.

Mass marketing is for the big boys. That is what you have come to hear very often. But the big boys were once small as well. They started small and slowly grew into a size to be reckoned with. Similarly, if you are prepared to work hard and consistently grow your mass marketing business, over time, you should see your business thriving. But this requires a lot of grit and patience, which is not what everyone has.

One interesting observation to note is that many successful affiliates start off with niche marketing first before they move into mass marketing. Perhaps the instant gratification afforded by niche marketing does make it more appealing to start off with this mode of affiliate marketing over mass marketing. After all, every affiliate needs to see some real income coming into their accounts to stay motivated.
